Traverse City, Michigan — A man is facing potential terrorism and multiple assault charges after allegedly launching a random stabbing spree at a Walmart, injuring 11 shoppers. Authorities reported that the suspect, identified as Bradford Gille, was apprehended by bystanders in the store parking lot shortly after the attacks. The motivation behind Gille’s actions remains under investigation.
Gille, a resident of nearby Afton, has a history of violent behavior, including past assault incidents and drug-related offenses. During his arrest, he reportedly offered little resistance and minimal commentary. Officials are preparing to charge him with one count of terrorism and 11 counts of assault with intent to kill.
Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea commended the swift actions of local law enforcement and bystanders, noting that deputies arrived at the scene within three minutes of receiving the first emergency calls at approximately 4:43 p.m. on Saturday. The quick coordination reportedly prevented further harm to others.
“The response time was remarkable,” Shea stated. “By the time officers reached the scene, the suspect had already been detained. Their actions likely saved lives.”
County Prosecutor Noelle Moeggenberg indicated that the terrorism charge stems from the broader implications of the attack, which created fear within the community, rather than exclusively targeting individual victims. “This incident aims to instill fear in the entire community and disrupt our daily lives, making it a matter of public safety,” Moeggenberg explained.
Among the victims, who ranged in age from 29 to 84, were both men and women, including a Walmart employee. Medical professionals at Munson Medical Center reported that while one person was treated and released, two victims remained in serious but stable condition, and the other eight were categorized as fair, with all expected to survive.
Witnesses recounted the chaos that unfolded. Steven Carter, who witnessed the attack while loading his vehicle, described a scene of horror as he saw Gille assault a woman with a knife. Bystanders quickly converged, some even brandishing weapons, urging Gille to drop his knife. “At first, it didn’t seem real. I thought it could be a terror attack,” Carter recalled. “Within moments, he was on the ground and subdued by the time police arrived.”
Tiffany DeFell, who was in the parking lot during the incident, expressed disbelief. “It felt like something from a movie. You never expect such violence in your own neighborhood,” she said.
The weapon used in the attack was reportedly a folding knife, and the stabbings occurred near the store’s checkout area. Authorities have confirmed that the victims were chosen at random and were not targeted in any specific manner.
In response to the incident, Walmart announced it would continue cooperating with law enforcement as investigations unfold. The retail chain has assured its employees that they will still receive pay while the store remains closed and has included counseling services for affected staff. The reopening date for the store has yet to be determined.
As the local community comes to terms with the attack, the FBI has also pledged support, sending officials to assist in the ongoing investigation.
