Police said a second downtown death Monday was unrelated and self-inflicted.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. — San Diego police arrested a 22-year-old man Monday after a fatal stabbing near the city’s downtown courthouse prompted a homicide investigation and brief traffic closures.
The stabbing was reported shortly before 1 a.m. near C and Union streets, close to the San Diego Central Courthouse. Officers found a wounded man, gave aid and sent him to a hospital. Police said he later died. Authorities described him as a man in his 30s or 40s, but his name had not been released.
Investigators said nearby surveillance cameras recorded the attack. Police searched for a man in dark clothing who had been seen walking in the area of C Street near Front Street. Later, Metropolitan Transit System security found a person matching that description at the Imperial Avenue Trolley Station and alerted police.
Officers took Conrad Waldron into custody. Police said Waldron would be booked on suspicion of murder. The department said early evidence did not show that Waldron and the victim knew each other. Homicide detectives stayed in the area Monday to collect evidence, look for more video and speak with possible witnesses.
The stabbing scene affected a busy part of downtown before the morning commute. Trolley service was briefly restricted, and traffic was shut down on the 200 and 300 blocks of West C Street and the 1100 block of Union Street. Officials said pedestrians could still reach the courthouse.
A second police response began before 5 a.m. near 13th and F streets after someone reported an unresponsive man. Officers tried to revive him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Police later said that death was self-inflicted and not connected to the homicide investigation near the courthouse.
Police had not released a motive, the victim’s name or a full account of what happened before the stabbing. The next step is jail booking, review by prosecutors and continued work by homicide detectives to complete witness interviews and evidence checks.
