Child Fatally Shoots 7-Year-Old Inside Ferris Home

A 7-year-old died after police said another child accessed a firearm inside a Tidwell Drive home.

FERRIS, Texas — Newly obtained arrest records describe how investigators say a firearm moved through a Ferris home after 7-year-old Tre’Shawn Moore was fatally shot by another child on May 23.

The records place Takievion Holmes at the center of the evidence-handling part of the case. Holmes faces charges of tampering with physical evidence and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, while officials continue reviewing whether additional charges are warranted.

The shooting happened inside a home on Tidwell Drive in the Shaw Creek area, according to Ferris officials and court records. Responders were called for a gunshot wound to a juvenile in the living room. Investigators said a young resident picked up an unattended firearm and discharged it. The shot struck Moore in the upper torso. City Manager Dr. Brooks Williams said the child’s death was “an unimaginable tragedy,” and city officials said the loss affected relatives, neighbors and emergency workers.

Investigators wrote that an internal surveillance system captured Holmes after the gunfire. The affidavit says Holmes picked up the firearm, moved toward his room and later left the house. Police said witnesses gave statements that matched the video account. Officers later located Holmes after he first avoided them at a convenience store, the records say. He was arrested at a small neighborhood park near the scene.

Ferris police said Holmes had been riding in an SUV with his girlfriend before the arrest. Authorities said she does not face criminal charges. Officials have not publicly answered several key questions, including the full chain of custody of the gun before the shooting and the exact circumstances that allowed the child to reach it. Police have said other children were in the home when the shooting occurred.

The affidavit says investigators showed Holmes the surveillance video and discussed witness accounts that alleged he brought the gun into the home. Holmes then admitted taking the gun and running because Moore had been shot, according to the document. Ferris police are working with the Texas Rangers, the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office and the Ellis County District Attorney’s Office as the case moves through review.

The city said chaplaincy support was offered after the shooting. DeLeon, the deputy city manager overseeing public safety, said first responders faced an “incredibly difficult scene” and that investigators were committed to developing the case based on evidence. A family interview request was declined, CBS News Texas reported. No one at the Tidwell Drive home responded when the station sought comment.

Moore was buried June 6. Holmes remains charged in the case, and prosecutors will determine the next legal steps after reviewing the investigation file.
