Man Sentenced to Three Years and Six Months for Attacking Police Officer in Leicester

Leicester, England – A man in Leicester, England, has been sentenced to three years and six months in prison for attacking a police officer. James Nutting, of Beaumanor Road, approached PC Jagruti Chhaganlal while she was on duty near his home in August. The 45-year-old punched and kicked the officer multiple times before walking off. He admitted to Section 18 grievous bodily harm and was sentenced at Leicester Crown Court on Thursday.

The attack left PC Chhaganlal in the hospital with a laceration to her head as well as swelling and bruising on her face and arms. Despite her injuries, she has since returned to work on restricted duties. Prior to this incident, PC Chhaganlal had previously dealt with Nutting after reports of him racially abusing and making homophobic remarks to neighbors.

Chief Constable Rob Nixon expressed deep concern over the assault, emphasizing the unacceptable nature of assaults on police officers. DC Kate Dabrowska, the investigating officer, reported that Nutting showed no remorse for his actions and walked off after the attack, leaving PC Chhaganlal in need of aid from nearby witnesses before emergency services arrived.

The impact of the attack will likely stay with PC Chhaganlal for some time. A scar under her eye serves as a daily reminder of the trauma she endured. The incident has also affected her confidence and made her reconsider her career in the force. Chief Constable Nixon stressed that violence against emergency service workers will never be accepted as part of the job, affirming the community’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of those who serve and protect.
