Man Killed, Two Wounded After Midtown Parking Lot Fight Turns Violent

Officers nearby heard the shots and found multiple victims after a parking lot fight.

HOUSTON, Texas — A late-night fight outside a Midtown club ended in a fatal shooting Monday, leaving one man dead, another critically injured and a third wounded, according to Houston police.

The gunfire was reported about 2:09 a.m. near Milam and Anita streets, where officers were working an extra job at a nearby club. Police said the officers heard several shots from a parking lot across the street and went to investigate.

Police said the scene was crowded because the club had been letting out and people were walking to their vehicles. Investigators said a fight involving several males escalated when at least one person pulled out a gun and fired several rounds. Officers found one wounded man at the scene, while another made it across the street before falling.

Houston Fire Department paramedics took two men to a hospital, police said. One of them was pronounced dead. The second was last reported in critical condition. A third victim later arrived at a hospital by private vehicle with a gunshot wound to the arm.

Lt. J.P. Horelica said officers detained two possible suspects after the shooting. Police said one officer pursued a man who had been seen with a weapon, but the weapon was not with him when he was taken into custody. Officials had not said Monday whether a gun had been recovered.

Investigators had not released the names or ages of the victims. Police also had not confirmed whether the people involved were patrons of the nearby club or had gathered in the area for another reason. The cause of the fight remained under investigation.

The case now moves through the homicide investigation process. Detectives are expected to sort through witness accounts, nearby video and physical evidence before prosecutors decide whether charges will be filed against anyone detained or later identified.

The shooting added another major police response to a busy Midtown nightlife area where large crowds can gather after closing time. Police said the most urgent unanswered questions are who fired, where the weapon went and what started the fight.

As of Monday afternoon, police had reported two possible suspects detained but no public charging announcement. The next formal update is expected after homicide detectives complete early interviews and consult with prosecutors.
