A toddler survived the Central neighborhood collision as Cleveland investigators worked to determine what caused the two vehicles to crash.
CLEVELAND, Ohio — A man died and two other people, including a young child, were hospitalized after a two-vehicle crash Thursday evening at East 55th Street and Cedar Avenue in Cleveland’s Central neighborhood, according to local authorities.
The crash became a fatal investigation after the man was taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead. FOX 8 reported Friday that the victim had been identified. The victim’s name was not available in the other accessible reports reviewed for this article, and no additional identifying information is being added without independent confirmation.
Police, fire and emergency medical crews responded to the intersection after the collision. News 5 reported that three people were transported from the scene. Images from the crash showed extensive damage to a Lincoln Town Car and a blue Hyundai Sonata.
A young child who was inside the Lincoln was also taken to University Hospitals. Cleveland fire officials said the child was ejected during the crash but was in stable condition after being hospitalized. Another person involved in the collision was also taken for medical treatment.
The severity of the damage was evident at the intersection. The Lincoln came apart during the collision, while the Hyundai sustained substantial damage. Detectives and crime scene personnel remained at the location Thursday night as investigators documented the scene and worked to reconstruct the sequence of events.
An eyewitness told News 5 that one of the vehicles appeared to be traveling quickly shortly before the crash. That observation has not been established as an official finding about the cause of the collision. Authorities had not announced whether speed, impairment, a traffic violation or another factor caused the crash.
The collision occurred in a busy section of Cleveland where East 55th Street crosses Cedar Avenue. Police did not immediately release a detailed account identifying which vehicle entered the intersection first, the direction each vehicle was traveling or who was driving each car.
Authorities also had not announced citations or criminal charges connected with the crash. The investigation remained active as police sought to determine how the collision occurred and whether any additional enforcement action would follow.
The child’s stable condition provided one confirmed update after the fatal crash, while investigators continued examining the evidence surrounding the man’s death and the circumstances of the collision.
