Police searched the Marshall House Apartments after reports that two people ran inside following a deadly shooting Tuesday night.
LANSDOWNE, Pa. — A fatal shooting beside a Lansdowne apartment complex led police to lock down the building and conduct an extensive search Tuesday night, bringing armed officers and a K-9 team into a residential area where neighbors said serious violence was uncommon.
The shooting happened around 10:30 p.m. near North Maple and Blackburn avenues, next to the Marshall House Apartments. Police found a man in the street with a fatal gunshot wound after officers were called to the intersection. His identity and age had not been released Wednesday.
Reports that two people ran into a side entrance of the apartment building after the shooting quickly shifted the police response toward the complex. Officers prevented people from entering or leaving while teams searched the building. Video from the scene showed police in a stairwell with a K-9 and officers carrying shields.
At least one person was taken into custody during the search. Authorities had not publicly identified that person, announced charges or explained the person’s alleged connection to the killing as of Wednesday. Police were still seeking another person believed to have been involved in the shooting.
The lockdown and search disrupted what residents described as an ordinarily quiet part of Lansdowne. Neighbors arriving outside Wednesday morning expressed surprise that a fatal shooting had occurred there. One resident told FOX 29 he had moved to the area from West Philadelphia in part because he considered the neighborhood quiet.
Another neighbor interviewed by 6abc described learning of the killing while heading to work as disturbing and said incidents of that kind were not something residents expected in the area. Authorities had not released information suggesting there was an ongoing threat to the broader neighborhood, but the search for a second suspected participant was continuing.
Investigators also were examining a badly damaged vehicle found near the scene. Police had not determined publicly whether the crash was connected with the shooting. A loaded magazine was recovered during the investigation, according to information provided by Delaware County officials.
Major questions about the case remained unresolved Wednesday, including what led to the gunfire, whether the victim knew the people police were seeking and whether the nearby vehicle played any role. Officials also had not provided a description of the person still being sought.
Police continued investigating the killing and searching for the second suspected participant Wednesday. The victim’s name, possible charges against the person taken into custody and a motive for the shooting had not been released.
