Man Dies After Driver Flees Northwest Miami-Dade Crash Scene

Investigators are working to determine whether the victim was walking or riding a bicycle.

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A fatal hit-and-run on Northwest 79th Street left detectives Saturday with several unanswered questions, including how the man was traveling when a driver struck him and fled.

The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said the crash occurred just before 8 p.m. Friday near Northwest 23rd Avenue. First responders took the injured man to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he later died.

Authorities said the victim may have been walking along the road or riding a bicycle, but investigators had not confirmed either detail. Deputies also had not released a description of the vehicle, saying the crash remained under investigation.

The driver left the scene before deputies arrived, officials said. Detectives were trying to locate both the vehicle and the person who was driving. The victim’s name was not made public Saturday morning.

The crash added another active investigation to a busy northwest Miami-Dade corridor. Northwest 79th Street carries traffic across several neighborhoods and connects drivers to major north-south routes in the county.

Investigators had not announced an arrest or a suspect description. The next step is expected to include witness interviews, review of nearby surveillance video and examination of crash evidence from the roadway.
