Body Found In Point Loma Median Sparks Homicide Investigation

The closure affected both directions between West Point Loma Boulevard and Tennyson Street.

SAN DIEGO — A homicide investigation in Point Loma shut down part of Nimitz Boulevard Thursday after police said a man was found injured in the center median and later died.

The closure covered both directions of Nimitz Boulevard between West Point Loma Boulevard and Tennyson Street. Police also closed the Nimitz Boulevard on-ramp from Famosa Boulevard while homicide detectives worked at the scene.

San Diego police said the incident was reported around 1:50 a.m. when a driver spotted a body in the median in the 4400 block of Nimitz Boulevard and called 911. Officers arrived and found the man, who was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead.

Sgt. David Garren said the man’s injuries were not consistent with a traffic collision. Because of that, police classified the case as a homicide investigation. Garren said the attack appeared targeted and not random, though police did not release a possible motive.

The closure remained in place for several hours as detectives examined the roadway and surrounding area. The affected stretch sits near major routes through Point Loma, where Nimitz Boulevard carries local traffic between beach communities, the Midway area and Interstate 8 access points.

Police had not announced an arrest, suspect description or victim identification in the latest update. Investigators were expected to continue reviewing evidence from the scene and any nearby records that could help explain how the man ended up in the median.

Authorities said the case remained active. The next update is expected when police or the medical examiner release the man’s identity, cause of death or additional investigative findings.
