Man Convicted of Murder After Shooting on Greyhound Bus in Oroville

OROVILLE, Calif. – A man named Asaahdi Coleman was found guilty of second-degree murder for opening fire on a Greyhound bus in Oroville, California, in 2022. The shooting resulted in multiple injuries and the death of one passenger, 43-year-old Karin Dolton. Coleman, 23, a resident of Sacramento, was convicted by a jury on charges of second-degree murder and attempted murder with gun enhancements. Although acquitted of three counts of attempted murder, Coleman was identified as a member of a Sacramento gang.

According to Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey, Coleman’s defense attorney argued during the trial that Coleman’s undisclosed mental illness impaired his ability to form intent to kill. Ramsey stated that Coleman is facing a possible sentence of up to 74 years to life in prison and could be eligible for parole after 25 years under California’s 2019 Youthful Offender Parole law. The sentencing is scheduled to take place on May 31 at 8:30 a.m. by Judge Corie Carraway.

The shooting incident occurred on February 2, 2022, when Coleman opened fire on the Greyhound bus, injuring an 11-year-old girl, a 25-year-old pregnant woman, a 32-year-old man, and a 38-year-old man in addition to the fatal shooting of Dolton. The tragic event led to a wave of shock and sadness in the community, with many calling for justice for the victims and their families.

Ramsey emphasized that the conviction serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of gun violence on individuals and families. The sentencing of Coleman marks a significant step in the pursuit of justice for the victims of the senseless attack. As the community grapples with the aftermath of the tragedy, many are hopeful that the legal proceedings will provide closure and accountability for the harm caused by Coleman’s actions.

Overall, the verdict sends a strong message about the need to address issues related to gun violence and mental health in order to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future. The outcome of the case underscores the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions and seeking justice for those affected by acts of violence.
