Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Dies 6 Months After Training Range Fire Incident

Los Angeles, California – A tragic incident has led to the passing of Deputy Alfredo “Freddy” Flores, a veteran Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy. Flores, 51, succumbed to severe burns sustained in a fire at one of the department’s mobile shooting ranges in Castaic. The incident occurred in October, and despite six months of treatment at Valley Presbyterian Hospital, Flores tragically passed away on Saturday.

Flores, with 22 years of service in the department, had earned respect both within the law enforcement community and among the residents he served. His death has left a significant void for those who knew him. The Sheriff’s Department expressed their condolences and highlighted his dedication to his duty.

The fire that resulted in Flores’ injuries took place at a trailer parked near Pitchess Detention Center, prompting an investigation into the cause. This incident has raised concerns as it marks at least the fourth time in recent years that a mobile range operated by the Sheriff’s Department caught fire, reflecting potential safety risks associated with such facilities.

Following the tragedy, the department ceased the use of all mobile firing ranges, initiated an internal investigation, and sought assistance from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. This response underscores the seriousness of the situation and the need to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Despite the inherent risks associated with his role, Flores’ family was unprepared for his untimely demise due to equipment malfunction during a routine training exercise. Their spokesperson indicated gratitude for the discontinuation of mobile shooting ranges and left open the possibility of legal action to seek accountability for the tragic loss.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn echoed sentiments of sadness, emphasizing the sacrifice Flores made in serving his community. The impact of his passing extends beyond his immediate family, resonating throughout the law enforcement community and the public he devoted his career to protecting.

As funeral arrangements are underway, the memory of Deputy Flores serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by those in law enforcement and the need for continual vigilance in ensuring safety protocols are strictly adhered to in all training exercises.
