Police said the 29-year-old victim was critically wounded after a group approached the home around midnight and entered an open garage.
HOUSTON, Texas — Houston police were searching Wednesday for five masked suspects after a 29-year-old man was shot multiple times during a confrontation inside the garage of a southeast Houston home.
The shooting happened around midnight Aug. 12 in the 9900 block of Tiltree Street, near Fuqua Street. Police said the man was sitting in the open garage with his 22-year-old girlfriend when the group approached the property. The woman was not injured. The man was taken to a hospital in critical condition, and investigators said he was expected to survive.
Police said the five people walked along the side of the property before moving toward the front of the home and entering the garage. Investigators said the first person to enter was armed and began yelling at the man. His girlfriend ran into the house, locked herself inside another room and hid while the confrontation continued.
The remaining members of the group then entered the garage, and a fight broke out, according to police. Investigators said more than 20 shots were fired during the encounter. Officers later recovered two firearms and numerous shell casings at the home, but police had not determined who fired the weapons or whether the wounded man also fired a gun.
The victim was struck in the neck, arm and side. Because he was taken quickly to the hospital for treatment, investigators were not immediately able to obtain a detailed account from him about what happened before and during the shooting. Police said that left detectives with significant questions about the confrontation and what brought the group to the home.
All five suspects fled on foot after the gunfire stopped, police said. The victim’s girlfriend came out of the room where she had been hiding, found him wounded and called for help. Neighbors who heard the disturbance also came outside and tried to assist before emergency crews arrived.
Police had not announced a motive Wednesday. Investigators were trying to determine whether the group went to the home as part of an attempted robbery or whether the victim had been specifically targeted. Authorities also had not released detailed descriptions of the suspects beyond saying they wore masks, and police had not confirmed the sex of everyone in the group.
Detectives were looking for surveillance video from homes near Tiltree Street that might show the suspects approaching the property or leaving after the shooting. No arrests or suspect identifications had been announced as the investigation continued Wednesday.
