The pickup continued south after shots were fired near Airtex before its driver left the freeway near Glenborough, police said.
HOUSTON, Texas — A pickup truck continued south on Houston’s North Freeway after being struck by gunfire late Sunday, ending near Glenborough Drive where police found a 19-year-old passenger critically wounded inside.
Houston police said the shooting began about 11:30 p.m. near Interstate 45 and Airtex Boulevard. Someone opened fire on the pickup as it traveled south, and the driver continued along the freeway before eventually pulling off near Glenborough.
Officers who located the truck found that the 19-year-old man riding in the back seat had been shot. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Two other people were also inside the pickup, though police did not publicly identify any of the occupants.
The truck itself became a key part of the early investigation. Video from the scene showed apparent bullet holes in the black pickup, while witnesses told police that another vehicle had pulled alongside it before several shots were fired.
Investigators had not released information identifying the vehicle from which the shots were fired. They also had not announced a suspect description or said whether detectives had recovered surveillance video or other evidence showing the vehicle’s route before or after the shooting.
Police said they did not believe the attack was an instance of road rage. Beyond that assessment, authorities had not disclosed what they believed prompted the shooting or whether the pickup’s occupants had any prior contact with the person or people responsible.
The movement of the pickup after the gunfire left investigators with more than one location to examine: the area near Airtex where police said the shooting occurred and the area near Glenborough where officers found the wounded passenger and damaged vehicle. Authorities had not released additional details about evidence collected at either location.
No arrest or criminal charge had been announced by Monday morning. Police also had not released the wounded man’s name or an updated medical condition beyond saying he was critically injured.
The investigation remained active Monday as detectives worked to determine who fired at the pickup, why it was targeted and what vehicle was involved in the attack.
