Honoring Lives Lost: Kalamazoo Families Promote Kindness and Community Spirit on the 10th Anniversary of the Uber Shooting

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — As the tenth anniversary of the tragic Kalamazoo Uber shooting approaches, families of the victims are finding solace and strength through acts of kindness. On February 20, 2016, six lives were taken and four more were injured by a gunman in a series of shootings that shocked the community. In remembrance of their loved ones, family members are encouraging others to partake in 10 days of positive actions, marking the anniversary with renewed hope and compassion.

Laurie Smith and Emily Bowden, relatives of victims Rich and Tyler Smith, established the ForeverStrong Foundation in the aftermath of the shooting. They aim to honor the memory of the victims while also fostering community spirit and support. “We just want kindness,” Laurie Smith said. “In their memory, we want people to be kind.” The campaign encourages individuals to perform acts of kindness, sharing their experiences online with the hashtag #carrytheirlight to inspire a wave of positivity.

The ForeverStrong Foundation has actively supported the Kalamazoo community through various initiatives, including scholarships, therapy dogs, community events, and grief support groups. The organization’s scholarship program offers two $1,500 awards annually to students who exemplify the spirit of joy and resilience that Tyler Smith embodied, reflecting his soccer jersey number of 15.

In the wake of the shooting, plans were proposed for a public memorial and sports facility that would honor not only the victims of the Uber shooting but also those lost in a tragic bicycle accident just months later. While funding and logistics have stalled progress, Bowden remains hopeful. “It’s always been a dream, but unfortunately getting there is just harder than what it seems,” she expressed. Community members continue to support the vision as part of their healing process.

The impact of that fateful night extends beyond the immediate victims. Survivors and family members maintain connections through a private Facebook group, providing a platform for sharing resources and emotional support. Smith often interacts with those involved, emphasizing the importance of continuing to promote kindness despite their shared tragedy.

ForeverStrong remains committed to fostering a sense of unity in the community. “Our mission is to strengthen our community as we honor the victims and survivors of tragedy,” the foundation states on its website. Their ongoing efforts not only commemorate lost lives but also work toward a hopeful future where acts of kindness prevail.

As the Kalamazoo community reflects on the events of a decade ago, the message is clear: through remembrance and compassion, the legacy of the victims will continue to shine brightly, inspiring all to spread kindness in their everyday lives.
