Police arrested an 11-year-old girl after her brother’s death, while details about the firearm and events inside the home remain undisclosed.
EDMOND, Okla. — Investigators have not publicly explained how an 11-year-old girl allegedly gained access to a firearm or what happened before her 15-year-old brother was fatally shot inside their Edmond home, leaving key questions unanswered days after her arrest.
Edmond police arrested the girl shortly before 1 a.m. Thursday and took her to a juvenile detention facility, where she was booked on a complaint of second-degree murder. Officers had responded about nine hours earlier to a reported shooting at the family’s home on Lapwing Road. The boy was found dead inside from an apparent gunshot wound.
The siblings were believed to be the only people in the home at the time, according to police. Their mother was away. Reporting based on police communications said the girl contacted her mother after the shooting and said someone had shot her brother. Authorities have not released a detailed account of what investigators learned during the hours between the initial call and the girl’s arrest.
Among the unanswered questions is the source of the firearm. Police have not publicly said who owned it, where it had been stored or how the 11-year-old allegedly obtained it. Authorities also have not announced a motive or described any argument or other event that may have preceded the shooting. The limited release of information reflects, in part, the fact that both children are juveniles.
The Oklahoma County District Attorney’s Office had not filed a formal charge as of Friday, according to KOCO. The police booking complaint marks an allegation and is not a finding of guilt. Prosecutors must review the investigation before determining what allegations, if any, will be formally pursued through the juvenile justice system.
Questions surrounding access to the firearm could become part of the broader investigation. KOCO reported that an attorney discussing the case expected prosecutors to examine how the children were able to gain access to a gun and whether any additional legal issues arose from its storage or availability. Authorities themselves had not announced a finding of negligence or said another person would face charges.
Police have also said they are examining the case for the possibility of additional arrests or charges, but no such action had been announced. That review does not establish that another person committed an offense. Investigators have released no evidence assigning criminal responsibility to a parent, gun owner or any other person beyond the allegation against the 11-year-old.
The shooting stunned residents in the Edmond neighborhood. Neighbors told KOCO they viewed the family as friendly and described the death and arrest as unexpected. Police vehicles arrived at the area shortly after the afternoon report and remained as investigators processed the scene and worked to determine what had occurred inside the house.
The identities of the girl and her brother have not been released by police. Authorities have said they will continue limiting information because of the children’s ages. As of Saturday, officials had not publicly announced a motive, explained how the firearm was accessed or provided a complete sequence of events inside the home before the boy’s death.
