KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A Missouri robbery suspect led the police on a high-speed chase, going the wrong way on an interstate highway and causing a fatal crash with an SUV early Tuesday morning, authorities said.
The deadly accident occurred just after 4 a.m. on Interstate 435 in Kansas City. Police have not released the names of the drivers who were killed in the crash.
According to police spokeswoman Alayna Gonzalez, the suspect was involved in armed robberies at three convenience stores between 2:30 a.m. and 4 a.m. Upon spotting the suspect’s vehicle after the third robbery, police initiated a pursuit.
During the chase, the suspect’s Dodge Challenger began traveling south in the northbound lanes of the interstate. Despite officers halting the pursuit, the Challenger ultimately collided head-on with a Chevrolet Equinox, resulting in the deaths of both drivers.
The tragic accident is currently under investigation, as authorities work to piece together the events leading up to the deadly crash.
