Marcus, Iowa — An explosion at the Little Sioux Corn Processors sparked an emergency response in Cherokee County on Monday afternoon. The incident, which occurred shortly after 4:30 p.m., was reported as an active situation involving grain processing facilities.
The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office promptly dispatched emergency responders to the scene, where they encountered heavy smoke emanating from the facility’s grain leg and a dust collector. Fire officials later classified the explosion as a dust-related incident that affected the ethanol production plant’s grain handling system.
Marcus Fire Assistant Chief Matt Dreckman provided insights into the challenges first responders faced. He noted that when firefighters arrived, they found significant smoke but no visible flames. “Once we opened access points and cooled down the system, the situation was relatively minor,” Dreckman explained.
Damage was primarily contained to a dust collector within the facility. Authorities are currently investigating the root cause of the explosion, ensuring that safety protocols are reviewed to prevent future incidents.
By around 5:20 p.m., emergency management officials confirmed that all employees and contractors at the plant were accounted for, assuring the community that the situation was under control. Fortunately, no major injuries were reported; however, one truck driver did sustain minor injuries.
Little Sioux Corn Processors, established in the early 2000s, is a key player in the region’s agricultural sector, producing approximately 170 million gallons of ethanol annually. The plant’s significance to local agriculture underscores the importance of maintaining rigorous safety measures, especially in settings involving combustible materials.
Authorities are working diligently to uncover the circumstances surrounding the explosion, and updates will be provided as investigations continue. The cooperative effort from local emergency services reflected the community’s commitment to safety and swift response in times of crisis.
