Girlfriend Killed, Two Would-Be Helpers Shot in Indiana Attack

The Muncie shooting left Cheyenne Angelina Raines dead and two men hospitalized after a roadside confrontation.

MUNCIE, Ind. — Two men who stopped after seeing a woman being dragged along a sidewalk were shot along with her, police said, in a May 10 case that has led to 10 charges against a Muncie man.

The woman, 23-year-old Cheyenne Angelina Raines, later died at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital. Police identified the suspect as Rylynn J. Davis, 21, of Muncie. Authorities said the case began as a domestic dispute and turned into a shooting outside a home on South Walnut Street.

Witnesses told investigators they saw Davis pulling Raines by her feet as she screamed. A Dodge pickup then stopped near them, and two men inside confronted Davis, according to court records. Police said surveillance video showed Davis hitting Raines before dragging her. The same recording captured the truck pulling up, followed by the sound of repeated gunfire.

Raines suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the face, neck, abdomen and back, according to reports describing the probable-cause affidavit. A 40-year-old man was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital with a head wound described in court records as life-threatening. A 39-year-old man was taken to a Muncie hospital with several abdominal gunshot wounds.

Davis told officers that Raines had a handgun and dropped it after falling, according to police accounts. He said he picked up the gun and began dragging her toward the house. Investigators said Davis also told officers there was a verbal exchange with the men in the pickup before he fired. One witness described Davis as “emotionless and cold,” according to reports on the affidavit.

The shooting happened about 5:30 p.m. in the 2700 block of South Walnut Street. Police said a passerby detained Davis before officers arrived. Investigators later found three children inside the home, ages 2 months, 2 and 3, locked in a bedroom that officers described as deplorable.

The charges against Davis include murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, criminal confinement, aggravated battery, criminal recklessness, domestic battery resulting in serious bodily injury, neglect of a dependent and pointing a firearm. He remained in the Delaware County Jail without bond after his arrest.

The next court step is Davis’ initial hearing, set for 9 a.m. May 27 in Delaware Circuit Court 1. The case remains in its early stage, and police have not released final medical updates for the two wounded men.
