A boy riding with her was critically injured as detectives searched for the driver of a silver or gray Nissan Versa.
MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A 10-year-old girl died after she and a boy riding an electric bicycle were struck by a vehicle Wednesday night in northwest Miami-Dade, authorities said, as investigators searched for a driver who left the scene.
Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies responded at about 8:40 p.m. Sept. 9 to the area of Northwest 117th Street and Northwest Seventh Avenue. Deputies found both children unresponsive in the roadway, according to the sheriff’s office. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue took them to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition. The girl later died from her injuries, while the boy was reported in critical condition.
Investigators said the vehicle was traveling north on Northwest Seventh Avenue as it approached Northwest 117th Street. The driver turned left onto 117th Street and struck the children as they traveled on the e-bike, authorities said. The driver then left the area. Detectives have not publicly identified the person they believe was behind the wheel.
The sheriff’s office described the vehicle as a silver or gray Nissan Versa from model years 2009 through 2012. Authorities also released an image of the vehicle believed to have been involved as detectives worked to determine who was driving it and where it went after the crash. No arrest had been announced in the information released after the collision.
The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit took over the investigation. Detectives asked nearby businesses to review surveillance recordings and urged people who may have witnessed the collision to come forward. Investigators were also seeking information from anyone who might recognize the Nissan described by authorities.
The crash occurred at an intersection where investigators said the Nissan was completing a turn when it struck the e-bike. News crews at the scene later recorded debris and the electric bicycle in the roadway while deputies investigated. Authorities have not released a full reconstruction of the collision or publicly detailed what happened in the moments immediately before impact.
The children’s full identities were not publicly released in the initial investigative information. Local 10 later reported that the girl was identified by the first name Peyton and that the boy was her older brother. Authorities did not immediately release additional identifying information as the investigation continued.
The death turned the case into a fatal hit-and-run investigation and left detectives trying to identify both the vehicle and its driver. The sheriff’s office said people with information about the crash or the Nissan could contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
As of the latest information reviewed, the Traffic Homicide Unit’s investigation remained active. Authorities had not announced an arrest or publicly identified a suspect, and investigators continued seeking witnesses, surveillance footage and information that could lead them to the driver.
