Police searched a nearby apartment complex and detained two people after an 18-year-old resident was killed late Tuesday.
LANSDOWNE, Pa. — A fatal shooting that killed an 18-year-old Lansdowne resident prompted an overnight lockdown and extensive police search of a nearby apartment complex, leaving residents confronting a large law enforcement response in a neighborhood several described as normally quiet.
The shooting occurred around 10:30 p.m. Sept. 8 near North Wycombe and Blackburn avenues. Police said an officer in the area saw two men near a vehicle before hearing several gunshots. A vehicle then traveled about half a block and crashed. Officers found the 18-year-old inside suffering from gunshot wounds, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the two men who had been seen near the vehicle ran into the nearby Marshall House Apartments. Officers responded to the complex, restricted access and began searching the building. Television footage from the scene showed officers moving through the property with shields and a police K-9 as residents remained inside during the search.
Two people were eventually detained for questioning, according to the latest police information. Authorities had not announced charges against either person, and investigators had not publicly identified them or described their possible roles in the shooting. Police also had not released a suspected motive, leaving key questions about what led to the gunfire unanswered.
The sudden police activity drew attention from residents who said serious violence was unusual in the immediate area. Some described being shocked by the shooting and the sight of officers searching the apartment building overnight. The Delaware County District Attorney’s Office took part in the investigation Wednesday. The teenager who died was identified by authorities only as an 18-year-old Lansdowne resident. His family was seen near the scene Wednesday but did not speak publicly. Officials had not released his name, and no additional details about his background were made public. Police Chief Kenneth C. Rutherford Jr. called the death a tragedy and expressed condolences to the young man’s family and loved ones.
The investigation also left unresolved whether the crash happened because the teenager had already been wounded and whether anyone else was inside the vehicle before it left the area.
