Four Shot on West Philadelphia Block During Evening Rush

The victims were stable after the Tuesday evening shooting in West Philadelphia.

PHILADELPHIA — Detectives were reviewing neighborhood camera footage after four people were shot Tuesday evening in the Parkside section of West Philadelphia, police said.

The gunfire erupted around 5:10 p.m. on the 1200 block of North 42nd Street. Police said the victims, three men and one woman, were taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center and were stable after the shooting.

A 45-year-old man shot in the torso was the first victim found by officers, police said. Two other men, ages 41 and 45, were shot in the foot and leg. A 38-year-old woman was also shot in the leg and arrived at the hospital by private vehicle.

Police said six spent shell casings were found at the scene. Officers also recovered a folding knife and found an empty car that had been hit by bullets at least four times. Investigators said city crime cameras nearby showed a group running away, but the cameras did not record the shooting.

Chief Inspector Scott Small said officers found several doorbell cameras on the block and were working to collect that footage. Police had not reported an arrest, named a suspect or said what led to the shooting.

The shooting left neighbors shaken as police marked evidence and checked vehicles along the block. Neighbor Kelvin Kelly said he heard gunfire and came outside to find his car damaged. “I didn’t realize it was a shot until I heard people screaming,” Kelly said.

Police said the case remained under investigation Wednesday, May 13, with detectives focused on video, witness accounts and evidence recovered from the block.
