Deputy Shoots Knife-Armed Man as Harris County Home Burns

Authorities said the man came from a burning home armed with two knives.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A Harris County sheriff’s deputy shot a 47-year-old man Wednesday afternoon after deputies responded to a family disturbance call at a home in northeast Harris County, authorities said.

The shooting happened in the 15600 block of Morning Dove Drive after deputies were told a woman had been assaulted by her son. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said deputies arrived, found the woman injured and learned the man had locked himself inside the house.

Deputies were called at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. Officials said the woman came out of the home with minor injuries. Assistant Chief John Nanny said she had “a knot on her forehead and a laceration on her face.” Deputies then tried to get the man to leave the house. Officials said he refused commands for more than an hour before smoke began coming from inside.

Law enforcement officials said the man later came out through the garage armed with two knives. A deputy fired and struck him. Deputies gave aid until emergency medical crews took the man to a hospital. Gonzalez said Wednesday that the man was in critical condition. A sheriff’s office update Thursday said he was no longer hospitalized, though his condition was not known.

The deputy who fired is about 31 years old and has worked for the sheriff’s office for about seven years, authorities said. No deputies were injured. The woman was treated for minor injuries. Officials have not released the names of the man, the woman or the deputy.

The case remains under investigation. Officials said they are reviewing what happened before the deputy fired, how the fire started and whether the man was involved in setting it. Authorities have not said whether charges have been filed.

Fire crews were called back early Thursday after flames rekindled at the home. Lt. R. Berry Jr. said no one was inside at the time and no foul play was suspected in the rekindled fire. Investigators were still working to determine the original cause.

The next public update is expected after sheriff’s investigators and fire officials complete more interviews and scene work. As of Thursday, the home remained part of an active investigation.
