Prosecutors say investigators later ruled out drowning in Aidan’s death.
FULLERTON, Calif. — An Orange County mother accused in her 2-year-old son’s death did not enter a plea Tuesday as prosecutors moved forward with a murder case that began as a reported bath drowning.
Melissa Lynn Beisel, 41, is charged with murder and assault on a child with force likely to produce great bodily injury resulting in death. The charges stem from the Sept. 22, 2025, death of her son, Aidan, at a Placentia home near Main Street and Santa Fe Avenue.
Police were called to the home around 9 p.m. that night. Aidan was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. At first, investigators said Beisel told detectives she had been giving the boy a bath in a storage bin used as a bathtub inside a walk-in shower.
Beisel told police she stepped away for about two minutes to get soap and returned to find Aidan facedown in water. Lt. Joe Connell of the Placentia Police Department said last year that the mother attempted CPR and then harmed herself with a sharp object after CPR did not work.
Investigators later said Beisel did not call police. Prosecutors said Aidan’s father called 911 after finding Beisel in the shower with the child. Authorities said Beisel had remained inside the bathroom for hours and was found with superficial wounds to her neck and arms.
The case changed after investigators ruled out drowning as the cause of death and determined Aidan died by homicide. Prosecutors have not publicly disclosed the exact cause of death. Beisel was arrested June 4, 2026, in Coarsegold, where officials said she had moved after the boy’s death.
Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said in a statement that Aidan’s death brought grief that “can never be healed.” He said prosecutors, investigators, first responders and medical professionals had worked with care as the case moved from the initial response to criminal charges.
The boy’s father, identified by NBCLA as L.J., said he still struggles with what happened. He said Aidan was an active child who liked trips to the park. “She does not belong out in public society,” he said of Beisel, adding that he wants the maximum punishment allowed.
Beisel appeared in court Tuesday and did not enter a plea. She is being held without bail. Her attorney declined public comment after the hearing.
The next court date is set for Aug. 28, when the case is expected to return before a judge.
