Deadly Gunfire Erupts at Oakland City MARTA Station

Police said the man who was shot died at the scene Monday evening.

ATLANTA, Ga. — A suspect was arrested after a man was fatally shot Monday evening at MARTA’s Oakland City station bus loop, where police responded to reports of gunfire shortly after 6 p.m.

The case remains under investigation by MARTA police. Officers found the victim with a gunshot wound when they reached the bus loop in southwest Atlanta. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not identified the man who died or the person taken into custody.

The shooting happened in the bus loop area tied to Oakland City station, a transit stop used by riders transferring between buses and trains. Police established a large perimeter after the gunfire and worked to secure the scene. MARTA police said an arrest had been made, but officials did not release details about how the suspect was found or what evidence connected that person to the shooting. The department said the case was still active.

Several key facts remained unknown Tuesday, including the victim’s age, the suspect’s age, a possible motive and whether the shooting followed an argument. Authorities also had not said whether a firearm was recovered. No additional injuries were reported in the initial police account. Service impacts, if any, were not immediately detailed by MARTA.

The killing adds to recent public safety concerns around major transit spaces in Atlanta. MARTA operates buses and rail service across the metro area, and its police department handles crimes on transit property. In a separate 2025 case, two MARTA police officers were injured in a shooting at Five Points station during an attempted arrest. That suspect was later captured in Alabama.

Next steps in the Oakland City case include confirming the victim’s identity, reviewing video from the station area and determining what charges the arrested person may face. The Fulton County District Attorney’s Office could receive the case after police complete the initial investigation.

For now, police have confirmed only one death and one arrest. Further details are expected after investigators notify the victim’s family and finish early evidence work at the station.
