Davenport Man Fires at Woman, Five Kids

NASHVILLE, TN – Jovien Smith, a former camp counselor once celebrated for turning his life around, now faces murder charges in a Nashville shooting that claimed the life of a child and injured others. The 26-year-old’s alleged actions during a domestic dispute have shocked those who knew him.

The violent incident occurred after Smith and his girlfriend engaged in an argument inside a Dodge minivan. As tensions rose, Smith reportedly threw her cellphone out of the vehicle before allegedly pulling out a handgun and firing.

The woman, despite being shot multiple times, managed to seek refuge in a nearby home. However, Smith allegedly targeted her five children, resulting in the tragic death of a four-year-old. Two other children, aged seven and one, are in critical condition, while a 13-year-old recovers from a stomach wound. The mother is also hospitalized with serious injuries.

Authorities have not released the names of the victims, who are from Illinois. Smith’s past has resurfaced, as he was once highlighted for his journey from a troubled youth to a counselor at Camp Abe Lincoln.

In a 2018 interview, Smith expressed pride in his ability to inspire others and his belief in making a positive impact. Now, he faces a grim reality with multiple felony charges, including criminal homicide, overshadowing his previous achievements.

Smith is detained in Nashville on a $2.6 million bond, awaiting his court appearance. The community is left to grapple with the shocking transformation of a once-promising young man.
