Taylor Gosnell faces two attempted murder charges after deputies found her 3- and 6-year-old children injured and alone at a Spartanburg County home.
SPARTANBURG, S.C. — A judge denied bond Sunday for a South Carolina mother charged with two counts of attempted murder after authorities said her two young children were attacked with a knife and a blunt object at a Spartanburg County home.
Taylor Gosnell, 35, was booked into the Spartanburg County Detention Center after deputies responded Saturday afternoon to a welfare check at a home in the 1400 block of Bud Arthur Bridge Road. The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office said deputies found Gosnell’s children, ages 3 and 6, injured and unattended. Both children were taken to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center for treatment.
The charges followed an investigation into what authorities said happened before deputies arrived at the home. Investigators determined that the children had been attacked with a knife and a blunt object, according to the sheriff’s office. Gosnell was subsequently charged with two counts of attempted murder, one for each child. The charges are allegations, and the case has not been resolved in court.
Authorities said the children are expected to recover. The 7th Circuit Solicitor’s Office said the 6-year-old suffered severe damage to an arm and that the injury could result in an amputation. Officials have not publicly identified either child, and additional details about their medical treatment have not been released.
The solicitor’s office also said televisions and mirrors inside the residence had been shattered. Authorities said Gosnell was taken by ambulance for an evaluation after she arrived at the residence and that she tried to leave the ambulance. Officials have not announced what, if any, findings resulted from that evaluation.
The case moved from an initial welfare investigation to a criminal proceeding within hours. Deputies had been sent to the residence around 2:30 p.m. Saturday to check on the children. Early information from authorities said a parent had been detained for questioning while investigators worked to determine what happened. Gosnell was later arrested and formally accused in the case.
The bond decision Sunday means Gosnell remained in custody as the criminal case moved forward. Authorities have not publicly announced a trial date or other final disposition in the case. No conviction has occurred, and prosecutors will have to prove the charges through the court process.
The sheriff’s office said the investigation remains active. Authorities have not publicly released a motive or a complete account of the events leading to the children being found, and no additional arrests have been announced.
