Child Dies After Gunfire Erupts Inside Miami-Dade Home

Authorities recovered a firearm and continue interviewing witnesses following the early morning incident.

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — A fatal shooting inside a Florida City residence claimed the life of a 5-year-old girl early Wednesday, leaving investigators to piece together what happened during the hours before emergency responders arrived.

The victim, identified by relatives as Genova Parks, was found with a gunshot wound after police responded to a call at a home in Florida City. While detectives have confirmed a firearm was located at the residence, officials have released few details about the moments leading up to the shooting. The investigation remains in its early stages as authorities work to establish a timeline and determine whether criminal charges are warranted.

Emergency calls brought Florida City police officers to the home on Northwest 1st Court shortly before 2 a.m. Officers found Genova suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso and immediately arranged transportation for medical treatment. A responding officer transported the child and her mother to Homestead Hospital. As medical personnel assessed the severity of her injuries, she was later airlifted to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital for specialized care. Despite those efforts, the child died from her injuries. Authorities have not disclosed additional medical details or specified exactly where inside the residence the shooting occurred.

Investigators said five people were present inside the home when the gunshot was fired. The group included Genova, her younger brother, her mother and two adult men. Detectives have not identified the adults publicly, nor have they explained their relationship to the child. Officials confirmed that a firearm was recovered at the scene and remains part of the investigation. Law enforcement personnel spent much of Wednesday collecting evidence, photographing the residence and conducting interviews. Authorities have not stated whether anyone has been ruled out as a suspect or person of interest.

Family members publicly mourned the loss of the child as details continued to emerge. Relatives described Genova as bright, active and full of life. Her death has intensified attention on unanswered questions surrounding the circumstances inside the residence. Investigators have not said whether the firearm was legally possessed, whether it had been secured before the incident or whether any adults in the home were responsible for supervising the children at the time. Those questions remain central to the ongoing inquiry.

The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Homicide Bureau assumed control of the case and is coordinating the investigation. Detectives have emphasized that no conclusion has been reached regarding whether the shooting was accidental, negligent or intentional. No arrests had been announced by Wednesday afternoon, and prosecutors had not publicly filed any charges connected to the incident. Investigators are expected to review forensic evidence, witness accounts and laboratory findings before making recommendations regarding possible criminal proceedings.

Outside the home, the scene reflected both grief and uncertainty. Family members gathered while investigators continued their work. Community members struggled to understand how a young child could suffer a fatal gunshot wound inside a residence occupied by multiple adults. The tragedy added another layer of heartbreak for relatives now coping with the sudden loss of a child remembered for her energy and joyful personality.

Authorities said the investigation remains active, with detectives continuing interviews and evidence analysis. Additional findings are expected once forensic testing is completed and investigators finish reconstructing the events that led to the shooting.
