Brothers Accused in Gas Station Shootout as Families Duck for Cover

Two brothers are accused after a confrontation escalated into a shootout.

MENOMONEE FALLS, Wis. — A confrontation between two men escalated into a shootout at a gas station in southeastern Wisconsin, leaving investigators to sort through what officials described as a dangerous and chaotic scene that could have ended in tragedy.

Authorities say the incident, which unfolded in the afternoon of April 28, drew attention due to its location at a busy fuel station where drivers and families were present. Prosecutors later said it was remarkable that no one was injured despite multiple shots being fired.

Surveillance footage shows a vehicle pulling up beside another car at a gas pump before the situation quickly escalated. Investigators say one of the suspects exited the vehicle with a firearm and approached the other driver, initiating a tense exchange. Moments later, gunfire erupted between the two sides.

According to court documents, the suspect fired several rounds toward the other vehicle as it attempted to leave the scene. The driver of the targeted car also fired at least one shot, telling authorities he acted out of fear for his safety. Bullet damage was later observed on the vehicle, underscoring how close the encounter came to causing serious injury.

The shooting unfolded in plain view of bystanders, including families at nearby pumps. Witness accounts described people scrambling for cover as shots rang out. One parent reportedly shielded a child during the incident, highlighting the immediate risk to uninvolved civilians.

Investigators later identified the suspects as brothers, ages 18 and 19, who were taken into custody after being linked to the incident. Authorities said a family member assisted in identifying them, and one of the brothers surrendered to police.

Prosecutors have charged both men with serious felony offenses, including attempted homicide. Additional counts include recklessly endangering safety and weapons violations. Officials emphasized that firing a weapon in a crowded public space significantly increases the potential for unintended harm.

While the exact motive remains under investigation, authorities said there may have been a prior connection between the suspects and the victim. The nature of that relationship, and whether it directly led to the confrontation, has not been fully detailed in court filings.

The case is now moving through the court system, with bail set at high amounts reflecting the severity of the allegations. Legal proceedings are expected to examine both the actions captured on video and statements provided by those involved.

Officials said the investigation is ongoing and additional details may emerge as evidence is reviewed and hearings continue.
