Detectives were searching for answers after Tatiana Pettus was shot inside a Foster Avenue building.
BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Police were investigating a suspected domestic shooting Wednesday after a 24-year-old woman was killed inside a Flatbush apartment building late Tuesday night.
The victim, Tatiana Pettus, was found around 11:25 p.m. at 2817 Foster Ave. after officers responded to a report of a shooting. Police said she had been shot in the neck. EMS rushed her to Kings County Hospital, where she died.
Police said the case appeared domestic, but investigators had not announced charges by Wednesday morning. Police sources said detectives were looking for Pettus’ boyfriend as a person of interest. Officials had not publicly said whether he had been contacted, whether he lived in the building, or what his exact connection was to the shooting scene.
The unanswered questions kept the focus on the apartment building itself. Detectives were working to determine what happened before the 911 call, who was inside or near the apartment, and whether the shooting followed an argument or another event. Police had not released the source of the 911 call or said whether neighbors reported hearing gunfire.
Investigators also had not said whether prior domestic complaints were tied to Pettus or the address. That detail remained important because police described the case as domestic in nature while still withholding key facts about the relationship, the suspect search and any earlier warning signs.
The shooting unfolded in Flatbush, a dense Brooklyn neighborhood of apartment buildings, shops and busy transit corridors. Late-night violence inside a residential building can raise separate questions for detectives, including access to the building, hallway or lobby video, and whether anyone saw the person who left after the gunfire.
The next steps were expected to include witness interviews, evidence collection and a search for surveillance footage from the building and nearby streets. If detectives identify a suspect, prosecutors would review the case before any formal charges are filed.
By Wednesday, police had released Pettus’ name and the location of the shooting but had not announced an arrest. The investigation remained open as detectives worked to identify who fired the shot and why.
