Kamarion Coleman was remembered at a Woodridge vigil as investigators continued examining the park shooting that wounded three other teenagers.
WOODRIDGE, Ill. — Family and friends gathered Monday to remember 18-year-old Kamarion L. Coleman, whose death in a Crest Hill park shooting came just before he was expected to begin training for a career in heating and air conditioning.
Dozens of mourners gathered at a Woodridge park for a vigil and balloon release honoring Coleman, a Woodridge resident who was killed late Saturday. His mother, Reeshema Coleman, said her son had been preparing to start HVAC school Monday, the same day relatives and friends instead came together to grieve his death.
“I’m not going to say he was perfect at all, but he was mine,” his mother said during the gathering, adding that the turnout showed how much her son was loved.
Two teenagers who survived the shooting were among those who attended the vigil, according to reporting from the gathering. Authorities have said four teenagers were struck by gunfire during a gathering at Crest Hill Memorial Park late Saturday night.
Crest Hill police said officers responded at about 11 p.m. to the 1900 block of Willow Court after shots were reported. Coleman and three other teenagers had been shot. The Will County Coroner’s Office later identified Coleman and said he was pronounced dead at 4 a.m. Sunday.
Another 18-year-old, a Joliet resident, was airlifted to a Chicago hospital in critical condition. A 15-year-old and a 16-year-old suffered injuries that police described as not life-threatening. Authorities have not publicly provided a comprehensive update on the conditions of the survivors.
Police have said the gunfire was connected to a gathering in the park and was not believed to be random. Investigators have not publicly explained what led to the shooting, identified a suspected gunman or released a motive.
An autopsy on Coleman was conducted Sunday. The coroner’s office said final findings on the cause and manner of his death remained dependent on additional police and toxicology reports, leaving that portion of the official death investigation unfinished.
Crest Hill police are investigating with assistance from the Will/Grundy Major Crimes Task Force. The investigation continued as Coleman’s family shifted from preparing for the next stage of his education to mourning him with friends and other members of the community.
No arrest had been publicly announced in the reporting reviewed through Tuesday. Investigators had also not released suspect information, leaving major questions about the shooting unresolved as Coleman’s family and friends remembered his life.
