ATLANTA — A fatal shooting investigation stretched from a northwest Atlanta apartment complex to Grady Memorial Hospital early Tuesday after a friend drove a wounded 22-year-old woman to the hospital before officers located her.
Police responded around 2 a.m. Sept. 1 to the Westside Court Apartments on Defoors Ferry Road after receiving a report of gunfire. Officers arrived at the complex but did not find the shooting victim there. They later learned that she had been taken to Grady in a private vehicle rather than an ambulance.
The woman was initially reported in critical condition and later died from her injuries. Police said she had been shot in the torso. Authorities had not released her identity Tuesday morning as homicide detectives continued gathering information about the events surrounding the shooting.
The unusual movement of the victim from the reported shooting location left investigators working with evidence at more than one place. Police concentrated on an apartment at the Defoors Ferry Road complex while officers also maintained a presence at Grady. A vehicle outside the hospital was part of the broader investigation, according to local reporting from the scene.
The man who drove the woman to the hospital was taken to Atlanta police headquarters to speak with homicide investigators. Police had not announced any charge against him or publicly identified him as a suspect. Authorities described him as a friend of the woman.
At the apartment complex, crime scene investigators were expected to search the unit and collect evidence that could help detectives establish a sequence of events. Police said the incident appeared to be isolated and associated with an apartment, but investigators were still working to determine a motive.
Early accounts left some details unresolved. Police information reported from the scene indicated investigators believed the shooting occurred inside the complex, while another local report said it was not yet clear whether the woman had been shot inside or outside an apartment. Authorities had not released a detailed chronology resolving that question.
No publicly identified suspect had been announced Tuesday morning, and police had not disclosed what investigators believed led to the gunfire. The woman’s connection to the apartment also remained limited in public information, with police saying she did not live at the complex.
