Ceasefire Detroit urged residents to share information as police investigated a shooting that wounded four relatives, including a child.
DETROIT — A community violence-prevention group is urging witnesses to come forward after a shooting on Detroit’s east side wounded a 10-year-old child, his mother and two other relatives, leaving the mother in critical condition.
Ceasefire Detroit responded after four members of a family were shot shortly before 6 p.m. Aug. 21 in the 3700 block of Haverhill Street. Police said the family members were leaving a location when an unknown vehicle pulled up and gunfire was directed toward them. No suspect had been publicly identified.
The victims included a 40-year-old woman, her 10-year-old child, a man in his 40s and a man in his 20s. Police said the two men are also relatives. The mother was critically injured, while the other three victims were expected to recover.
Tamara Smith, a program manager with Ceasefire Detroit, said the organization went to the scene as part of its response to violence in the city. The group works with residents and community members in an effort to prevent further violence and reduce tensions after serious incidents.
Smith urged anyone with knowledge about the shooting not to remain silent. “If you see something, say it,” she said, emphasizing the role witnesses can play as police try to determine who was responsible.
The appeal came as investigators searched for evidence in the neighborhood. Assistant Chief Kari Sloan said detectives were canvassing the area for surveillance footage. Police had not released a description of the vehicle involved or said what may have led to the gunfire.
Mayor Mary Sheffield also responded publicly to the shooting, calling it “senseless and indiscriminate violence.” She expressed support for the injured woman and her family as investigators continued their work.
Police recovered a weapon at the scene, though authorities had not explained what connection, if any, it had to the person who fired at the family. No arrest had been announced, and investigators had not publicly identified a motive.
Smith said Ceasefire Detroit would continue its community outreach following the shooting. Her appeal focused on residents who may have seen the vehicle, witnessed the gunfire or have other information that could help detectives piece together what happened.
The case remained under investigation as police sought witnesses and possible video evidence. Authorities had not announced a suspect or provided a newer public update on the mother’s condition in the latest reports available.
