Rosalyn Williams’ relatives say she brought a woman to safety before four people were shot outside her Sunnyside home.
HOUSTON, Texas — A 44-year-old Houston woman killed in a Sunnyside shooting had been trying to help a friend after a dispute with the friend’s boyfriend, her family said, before police say the man followed the group and opened fire on four people in a driveway.
Rosalyn Williams died in the Aug. 15 shooting at a home on Fairland Drive. Her husband and two women were wounded. Houston police later charged 51-year-old Kendrick Maurice Williams with murder and three counts of aggravated assault and said he remained wanted. Police have not said the suspect is related to Rosalyn Williams or her family.
Relatives told local news organizations that Rosalyn Williams had picked up Ashley Taylor, who was described as Kendrick Williams’ girlfriend, following a dispute and brought her to the Fairland Drive home. Rosalyn Williams’ mother, Sabrina Davis, told ABC13 that it was not the first time her daughter had gone to help Taylor.
Houston police said a witness reported that Kendrick Williams was upset with his girlfriend when he went to the residence and found four people sitting inside a vehicle in the driveway. Investigators allege that he then opened fire on the vehicle, striking everyone inside or nearby. The shooting was reported about 2:35 a.m.
Officers found Rosalyn Williams wounded in the driveway, according to the Houston Police Department. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene. Two women and a man were also found suffering from gunshot wounds and were taken to a hospital. Family members identified the injured man as Rosalyn Williams’ husband, Marcus Williams.
Early reports said Marcus Williams was critically wounded and undergoing treatment, while the two injured women appeared to be in stable condition. ABC13 later reported that he had been taken to Ben Taub Hospital with multiple gunshot wounds. Authorities have not released a comprehensive update on the conditions of all three survivors.
Court records reviewed by ABC13 say surveillance video captured Kendrick Williams waiting near the vehicle after the group arrived at the home. Investigators allege that he fired a shotgun into the vehicle four times and then moved around it before shooting Marcus Williams as he crouched near the driver’s side. Those allegations have not been tested at trial.
Rosalyn Williams’ daughter, Latonja Williams, described her mother to Click2Houston as a dependable person who tried to help others. Other relatives said the shooting had left the family grieving while the search for the accused gunman continued. Police have not publicly announced a motive beyond the dispute described by investigators and witnesses.
Kendrick Williams is charged in the 180th Criminal District Court and remained out of custody in the latest police update. Houston homicide detectives continue to investigate the shooting and search for him. No court proceeding resolving the charges has occurred, and the allegations against him remain pending.
