OAKLAND, California – Two men have been charged with murder in the tragic shooting death of an Oakland police officer who was responding to a burglary report at a marijuana business. Mark Sanders, 27, of Tracy, and Allen Starr Brown, 28, of Chico, have been accused of the murder.
During their court appearances, both men waived their arraignment, delaying their pleas to a later date. Sanders’ defense attorney, Annie Beles, urged the public to withhold judgment, reminding everyone that the presumption of innocence is a fundamental principle of the legal system.
The victim, Officer Tuan Le, 36, was fatally shot while in plainclothes and driving an unmarked truck to investigate a burglary at a suspected illegal cannabis grow house near Jack London Square. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries, becoming the 54th Oakland police officer to die in the line of duty, and the first killed in nearly 15 years.
Authorities allege that Sanders opened fire from a car with Brown inside as officers arrived at the scene. Sebron Ray Russell, 30, is also facing charges related to the burglary, and more arrests are expected as the investigation continues.
Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price and interim Police Chief Darren Allison announced the charges during a news conference, where they expressed their determination to seek justice for Officer Le. Price assured the victim’s family that her office would do everything within its legal power to ensure that the accused face the maximum punishment.
Sanders, Brown, and Russell all have prior criminal records, and their arrests shed light on the challenges law enforcement officials face in combating illegal activities associated with the cannabis industry.
