Winnipeg, Canada — A 33-year-old man has been identified as the suspect in a string of violent assaults, including an incident last week at The Forks that left a 30-year-old man unconscious. Daniel Christopher Dumas was recognized by police as the assailant in this and several other attacks, leading to a warrant for his arrest.
Dumas was released from federal prison earlier this year under strict conditions following a long history of criminal activity. His violent past includes a 2011 jailhouse beating that resulted in the death of 21-year-old Tyler St. Paul, whose injuries were so severe that he succumbed to them in a tragic manner. At the time of Dumas’s release in January, the Parole Board of Canada expressed serious concerns about his lack of remorse and ongoing pattern of violence.
According to Winnipeg police, the victim at The Forks was attacked while sitting in an outdoor area. After rendering the man unconscious, Dumas reportedly stole his belongings, later discarding some items near a pedestrian walking her dog. Just hours later, Dumas is believed to have assaulted a woman in West Broadway while she was waiting to purchase beer, stealing her purse.
In addition to the assaults, police linked Dumas to a break-in at a garage in River Heights shortly after the attack on the woman. While rummaging through a vehicle, Dumas attempted to enter the house but was unsuccessful, according to investigators.
Dumas has a troubling history that includes a lengthy prison sentence stemming from his involvement in St. Paul’s death in 2011. At the time, he and others from the Most Organized Brothers gang were involved in a brutal attack on St. Paul after he expressed a desire to leave the gang. The violence escalated to the point where the victim suffered fatal injuries.
Despite his release this January under conditions that mandated treatment for his impulsivity and violence, Dumas’s response to rehabilitation has been questionable. His previous time under release conditions ended with a brief stint in the community before he went unlawfully at large, accumulating additional charges for violent offenses.
The recent uptick in Dumas’s violent behaviors has raised alarms among authorities, especially considering his refusal to adhere to a treatment plan aimed at curbing his aggression. His conditions included abstaining from drugs and alcohol, as well as avoiding contact with known criminals and victims’ families.
Dumas’s history of violence and failure to comply with parole conditions poses a significant concern for public safety. Residents of Winnipeg are urged to remain vigilant, as police continue their efforts to apprehend the suspect in these latest incidents.
