WASHINGTON, DC – A house fire in Southwest D.C. today led to the dramatic rescue of a woman with mobility issues. The fire broke out on the first floor of a residence on the 4000 block of First Street, just west of Route 296. Firefighters quickly responded, and the woman was transported to the hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
In a separate incident, the city is grieving the untimely death of Sadiya Williams, a recent graduate of the D.C. Fire and EMS cadet program. Williams, 21, fell from a rooftop terrace during a celebration with fellow cadets on 16th Street Northeast. The fall occurred around 1 a.m. on Saturday. Authorities have ruled out foul play, but the circumstances of the accident remain under investigation.
Williams was set to join Engine Company 13 in Southwest D.C., where black bunting now hangs in her memory. The station’s flags are at half-staff, honoring the young cadet’s commitment and service.
Neighbors who witnessed the aftermath of the fall have expressed their sorrow, remembering Williams as a promising and dedicated individual. Her passion for firefighting and service was evident, and her loss is deeply felt by those who knew her.
The cadet program, which Williams had just completed, is tailored for local high school graduates. Although the graduation ceremony had taken place, the cadets were scheduled for additional training before beginning their assignments.
D.C. Firefighters Union President Dave Hoagland described the incident as a devastating blow to the department. Peer support teams have been made available to help Williams’ classmates cope with the loss.
Williams’ remains are with the medical examiner’s office, located near the firehouse she was to join. The department and community continue to support her family and fellow cadets through this challenging time.
