Accra, Ghana — A devastating fire on the Accra-Nsawam Highway claimed the lives of six people early Saturday morning, February 14, 2026. The blaze involved a petrol tanker and multiple vehicles, igniting a swift response from emergency services.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) reported that the fire erupted around 4:45 a.m. and left three victims dead at the scene. Three others succumbed to their injuries at Koforidua Regional Hospital, highlighting the tragic toll of the incident. In total, 15 individuals were injured, with a mix of 11 males and four females among the casualties.
According to Ignatius K. Baidoo, the GNFS’s Eastern Regional Public Relations Officer, firefighters from the Suhum Fire Station arrived at the chaotic scene to find an extensive vehicular fire already raging. The initial casualties included three individuals whose bodies were turned over to police for identification and further investigation.
The petrol tanker involved was transporting about 54,000 liters of fuel when it collided with a VIP bus, three saloon cars, and four motorcycles, all of which were engulfed in flames. Due to the rapid spread of the fire, additional support was called in from the Bunso Fire Station. Firefighters employed tactical measures, including foam compounds, to contain the blaze, which was brought under control by 8:24 a.m. and extinguished by 11:08 a.m.
In the aftermath, 12 injured individuals were initially transported to Nsawam Hospital. While two were released shortly after arrival, 10 patients in critical condition were subsequently referred to Koforidua Regional Hospital, where three later died. The remaining survivors, which included two male children, four male adults, and one female, are currently receiving treatment for their injuries.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire may have originated from sparks produced during attempts at illegal fuel siphoning from the tanker. The GNFS emphasized the dangers of such actions, warning the public against fuel siphoning and advising avoidance of scenes with flammable materials.
In the wake of this tragedy, the Eastern Regional Command expressed condolences to the families affected and called for community cooperation to improve fire safety measures throughout the region. The incident has raised concerns over public safety protocols and the need for stricter enforcement regarding illegal fuel activities.
Authorities continue to evaluate the situation as they work to provide closure for the victims’ families and prevent further incidents of a similar nature. Community safety remains a priority, highlighting the importance of awareness and adherence to regulations aimed at protecting lives.
