Investigators say no suspects had been identified after a burst of overnight gunfire sent four minors to hospitals.
LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. — Four teens were wounded early Saturday after gunfire broke out near a house party in the Litchfield Park area, prompting a large law enforcement response and leaving investigators searching for the shooters.
Maricopa County sheriff’s deputies said the shooting happened shortly after 1 a.m. near Dysart Road and Maryland Avenue, where dispatchers received reports of gunshots and people screaming. Deputies found four minors with gunshot wounds and sent them to hospitals with injuries authorities described as non-life-threatening. The case remained open Monday, with investigators still trying to determine what sparked the gunfire and who fired the shots.
Authorities said deputies were called out at about 1:17 a.m. after emergency dispatchers and responding deputies heard what they believed was gunfire in the neighborhood. Early accounts from the sheriff’s office said the shooting appeared to be tied to a juvenile house party. By the time deputies reached the scene, four minors had been struck. Officials did not release the victims’ names, ages or genders, and they did not say whether the wounded teens had been attending the party or were caught in the gunfire nearby. No arrests were announced in the first two days after the shooting.
Additional video obtained by local TV station Arizona’s Family appeared to show the violence lasting far longer than a brief exchange. In one clip, gunfire can be heard for more than a minute, with people apparently firing back and forth while others ran and ducked for cover. Neighbor Leigh Ann Treguboff said the volume of gunfire was startling and the damage spread across the block. “There was a lot of gunfire,” Treguboff said, adding that it was fortunate only four people suffered what she described as smaller injuries. She said teens jumped fences and rushed into nearby yards to hide as the shooting unfolded.
Treguboff also described the aftermath as chaotic. She said one wounded teen had been hit in the leg and stripped down while neighbors tried to help, and that another person appeared to have a bullet in the back. According to her account, a neighbor who is a doctor placed a tourniquet on one victim while others brought medical supplies to officers. Those details have not been fully outlined in public by investigators, who have released few specifics beyond the number of victims and the general location. Officials also have not said how many shooters may have been involved, how many weapons were used or whether the shooting began inside or outside the party.
The violence also appears to have damaged surrounding homes. Arizona’s Family reported that nearly every house on the block had at least one bullet hole, underscoring how widely the shots traveled through the neighborhood. That detail raised concern among residents who said the area is typically quiet. Neighbors told the station the home linked to the party was a rental, although property records cited by the outlet listed it as residential. Investigators have not publicly said whether the property owner could face scrutiny or whether deputies had been called to the home before.
For now, the investigation remains in its early stages. Sheriff’s officials have not announced suspects, a motive or any pending charges. They also have not said whether detectives are using neighborhood surveillance footage, cellphone video from partygoers or witness interviews to reconstruct the timeline. Treguboff said she believes young people at the gathering may eventually help investigators piece together what happened. The sheriff’s office has not released a date for its next formal update, but the case remained active Monday as detectives continued to seek leads.
As of Monday, all four wounded teens were expected to survive, and the search for the people responsible was still underway.
