Police said an uninvited group arrived before gunfire erupted inside and outside the home.
DALLAS, Texas — Three people were killed and one person was wounded early Tuesday after gunfire broke out during a party at a short-term rental home in West Dallas, police said.
Dallas police said officers were called at 12:21 a.m. to the 3700 block of Vilbig Road, near Bayside Street and Singleton Boulevard. When officers arrived, dozens of people were running from a large two-story house. Investigators said the home had been rented for a party that drew between 50 and 150 people.
Officers found three people shot inside the home. Dallas Fire-Rescue pronounced a man and a woman dead at the scene. A third person was taken to a hospital and later died. A fourth victim, a man, arrived at a hospital in a private vehicle with a gunshot wound to the buttocks. Police said he was expected to survive.
Investigators said the shooting began after an uninvited group came to the front door and an argument broke out with people at the party. Police said shots were then exchanged between people near the entrance and people inside the home. Detectives believe the victims were bystanders caught in the crossfire, but their names had not been released Tuesday morning.
Several people were detained as they left the area and were interviewed by homicide detectives. Police had not announced any arrests and had not released suspect descriptions. Officials said the shooter or shooters left before officers arrived, leaving detectives to sort through witness accounts from a large and chaotic scene.
The shooting added to questions about violence tied to large gatherings at short-term rentals in North Texas. Police confirmed the Vilbig Road property was being used for a party when the gunfire started. Investigators had not said who rented the home, how the party was organized or whether security was present.
Detectives were expected to review nearby video, collect shell casings and interview more witnesses as the investigation continued. Police said the case remained active and that no motive had been confirmed beyond the altercation at the door. The Dallas County medical examiner will identify the people who died after relatives are notified.
The block was quiet by daybreak as investigators worked around the home. Family members and others gathered near the scene while officers kept the area secured. Police said more details would be released as detectives confirm what happened and determine who fired the shots.
No arrests had been announced as of Tuesday morning. The next major update is expected after Dallas homicide detectives finish more interviews and notify victims’ families.
