Police said the red SUV struck two occupied vehicles and two parked vehicles after being taken from a repair shop.
CHICAGO — Four people were hospitalized in good condition after an SUV stolen from a Rogers Park auto repair shop struck several vehicles during an attempted getaway late Tuesday, Chicago police said.
The crashes occurred about 11:20 p.m. July 14 in the 6800 block of North Clark Street. Police said four male suspects had entered a business from the rear, taken a red SUV and damaged a garage door while trying to leave.
The stolen SUV struck a gray SUV, a black SUV carrying four people and two parked vehicles, according to police. Officials did not say how fast the SUV was traveling or identify the exact locations of the collisions within the block.
All four people in the black SUV were taken to hospitals. One woman was transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, while two women and a man were taken to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston. Police said each was in good condition.
The names and ages of those hospitalized were not released. Authorities also did not describe their injuries or say whether any remained at the hospitals Wednesday.
Police had not reported injuries involving the gray SUV or anyone associated with the two parked vehicles. It was not immediately clear whether those parked vehicles were occupied when they were struck.
The crash followed a break-in at the repair business. Police said the suspects entered through the rear of the shop and drove off in the SUV before hitting the garage door and the other vehicles.
Officers responding to an alarm detained one suspect at the scene, police said. Three others escaped on foot, and authorities had not released detailed descriptions of them by Wednesday.
Charges were pending against the person in custody. Police had not identified that suspect or said who was driving the SUV when the crashes occurred.
The investigation continued Wednesday, with police seeking the three people who fled and working to establish the full sequence of the burglary and collisions.
