Valley Stream, New York – A small explosion and fire at a residence in Valley Stream prompted the response of at least six fire departments on Saturday morning. The incident occurred on Lutz Drive, with reports indicating that wires on the home caught fire upon the arrival of the crews.
According to the Valley Stream Fire Department, a call was received around 11:30 a.m. detailing the situation at the residence. Despite a small explosion in the basement, no injuries were reported. A homeowner did suffer a minor burn on their ear but declined medical attention. Occupants of the home reassured that everyone was safe, albeit shaken by the event.
Following the incident, a National Grid crew remained onsite throughout the day, conducting tests on neighboring homes. In addition to their assessments, the crew also performed excavation work in the vicinity of the property where the fire originated. Requests for information on the duration of the ongoing activities from National Grid went unanswered by Saturday evening.
Valley Stream fire officials praised their swift response time, noting that they arrived at the scene within three minutes, extinguishing the fire within an hour and a half. Mike Colucci from the Valley Stream Fire Department acknowledged the challenges of dealing with fires in basements but commended the team’s efficiency in containing the situation.
As investigations into the cause of the explosion continued, authorities emphasized the importance of prompt reporting of such incidents to prevent potential hazards. Residents in the area were advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that could compromise their safety.
