Fayette, Alabama — A 37-year-old man was sentenced to life in prison Friday after pleading guilty to the murder of a young mother whose remains were discovered last summer. Michael Wade Tucker admitted to killing 21-year-old Laci Whitson, whose disappearance and subsequent death shocked the local community.
District Attorney Andy Hamlin said that Tucker’s plea marked the culmination of a tragic case that began when Whitson was reported missing after leaving a rehabilitation facility in Lauderdale County. Tucker and Whitson were last seen together, and her body was later found in a boat near Tucker’s home on County Road 52, wrapped in a blanket.
Judge Sam Junkin presided over the case and imposed the maximum sentence, providing a sense of closure for Whitson’s grieving family. “This was a horrific and senseless crime,” Hamlin stated. “While this plea cannot erase the pain endured by Laci’s loved ones, we hope it offers them a measure of justice and peace.”
Hamlin expressed gratitude towards the multiple law enforcement agencies that committed extensive resources to investigate the crime, including the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office and the Alabama State Bureau of Investigation.
