The confrontation inside an occupied San Jose residence ended with a police officer wounded and an armed robbery suspect dead.
SAN JOSE, Calif. — A family, including at least one juvenile, escaped physical injury after an armed robbery suspect fled into their San Jose home Tuesday, where police said he opened fire on officers before being fatally shot.
The occupied home became the center of an hourslong police response in the area of Lick Avenue and Goodyear Street, south of downtown. The confrontation left one San Jose police officer wounded and brought officers, sheriff’s deputies and emergency personnel into the residential neighborhood as investigators secured the scene.
Police said the events began after officers spotted a person suspected in two armed robberies from the previous weekend. Officers attempted to stop the SUV he was driving, but police said the suspect displayed a gun and fled. A short vehicle pursuit followed before the suspect left the SUV and ran into a nearby residence.
Police spokesperson Stacie Shih said officers entered the home because people were inside. Authorities said the residence was occupied by a family that included at least one juvenile. Officers located the suspect hiding in the home, police said, and the confrontation quickly turned into an exchange of gunfire.
According to police, the suspect fired toward two officers and struck one of them at least once. Officers returned fire. The suspect was shot and later pronounced dead at the scene, while the wounded officer was taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center for treatment.
The family inside the residence was not physically injured, police said. Authorities have not released further details about the occupants or described exactly where they were inside the home when officers confronted the suspect. Police also have not publicly identified the suspect.
The wounded officer was initially reported in critical condition. San Jose police later said early Wednesday that he had stabilized. The department had not released his name as investigators continued reviewing the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The incident prompted a broad law enforcement response around the neighborhood. Santa Clara County sheriff’s deputies assisted San Jose police, and numerous police and emergency vehicles gathered near the scene. Authorities kept the area active into the evening while detectives collected evidence and spoke with witnesses.
Mayor Matt Mahan visited the injured officer at the hospital Tuesday evening, according to his office. By later that night, some of the heavy police presence around Santa Clara Valley Medical Center had dispersed, while work continued at the shooting scene.
Investigators are still working to establish a complete timeline, including the pursuit, the suspect’s entry into the residence and the gunfire inside the home. Police have said additional information will be released as the investigation develops, but no timetable for further disclosures had been announced Wednesday morning.
