A man was killed after police said someone stepped from an SUV and fired a rifle.
HOUSTON, Texas — Houston police are looking for a suspect after a man was shot to death Wednesday night while sitting in a vehicle on the city’s northeast side.
The fatal shooting happened about 8:45 p.m. April 22 at 4200 Laura Koppe Road, police said. Officers found a 36-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds inside a vehicle. He was taken to a hospital and later died.
Police said early information showed an SUV stopped near the victim before the shooting. A person got out with a rifle and fired into the victim’s vehicle, striking him several times. Investigators had not said whether the victim and shooter knew each other.
Lt. R. Willkens said shell casings were left at the scene. He said the victim was badly wounded before firefighters arrived and took him for emergency care. No arrest had been reported as of Thursday.
The shooting is being investigated by HPD Homicide Division detectives A. Hernandez and R. Waterwall. The victim’s name was being withheld until the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences verified his identity.
The intersection sits in northeast Houston near Hirsch Road, where officers blocked part of the area while they collected evidence. Reports from the scene showed shattered vehicle windows and several markers near the roadway.
Police had not released a full suspect description, and the direction the SUV traveled after the shooting remained part of the investigation. Detectives are also working to determine what led to the gunfire.
The case remained open Friday, with investigators still searching for the shooter and reviewing evidence from the intersection. The next major step is the release of the victim’s identity or an arrest announcement.
