RAYTOWN, Mo. — Raytown High School is mourning student Joshua Lewis after he was fatally shot near the school Wednesday afternoon, a death that prompted administrators to announce counseling support and describe him as a beloved member of the Blue Jays community.
The Raytown C-2 School District confirmed Lewis’ death in a message to families Wednesday evening. The district said the loss was having a significant impact on the school and identified Lewis as a student athlete. Officials said counselors would be available to students as the school community responds to his death.
Lewis was shot near Blue Ridge Boulevard on Wednesday, Sept. 16. Raytown police said officers were sent to 6024 Blue Ridge Boulevard at 1:21 p.m. after receiving a report involving a juvenile male with a gunshot wound. Lewis was taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead.
The shooting occurred near Raytown High School and quickly affected the school day. At the request of law enforcement, the district directed students and staff who were still inside nearby buildings to remain there while police investigated activity in the area.
District officials told families during the response that there was no immediate threat inside the school buildings. Students and staff were temporarily prevented from leaving while administrators followed police guidance. Those restrictions were later lifted, and people who remained in the buildings were allowed to leave.
Raytown High School operates on an early-release schedule on Wednesdays, with dismissal listed at 12:55 p.m. Police reported receiving the shooting call about 25 minutes later. Authorities have not publicly explained the events leading to the shooting or said whether Lewis had remained near campus after dismissal.
The district said it would continue making counseling available during the week. Its message acknowledged that students can respond to grief in different ways and said school staff would work to support those affected by Lewis’ death.
The school’s description of Lewis as a student athlete added a personal dimension to an incident that police initially described only as the fatal shooting of a juvenile. The district publicly identified him later Wednesday. Officials had not released additional personal information about Lewis in the material reviewed.
Police have not announced an arrest, motive or suspect in the shooting. Investigators also have not publicly detailed the sequence of events before Lewis was wounded. The case remains under investigation while the district continues supporting students and staff following his death.
