Lakeview, Ohio – Ohio Governor DeWine commended the resilience of the people in Ohio after severe storms and tornadoes wreaked havoc in the Indian Lake area. The storms caused injuries and extensive damage to multiple structures, with at least 20 people hospitalized for tornado-related injuries. Fortunately, everyone in the affected areas in Logan County has been safely accounted for.
The National Weather Service confirmed that an EF-3 tornado hit Lakeview in Logan County, with wind speeds ranging from 136-165 mph. This tornado also caused damage in the Orchard Island area of Russells Point. Another EF-2 tornado struck Clark County east of Springfield earlier, damaging or destroying more than 100 homes.
In the aftermath of the storms, major roads near Lakeview and Russells Point were closed, with officials urging the public to stay away from the area unless instructed otherwise. Ohio’s Emergency Management Agency Director mentioned that damage assessments are ongoing to determine the level of community aid needed, including the possibility of declaring an emergency.
Governor DeWine, Lieutenant Governor Husted, and other officials visited the affected areas to assess the extent of the devastation. Residents like Holley Milroy shared harrowing experiences of the tornadoes, with some witnessing homes flattened while others, like Milroy, felt grateful for the solid brick structure of their homes that potentially saved them from more damage.
The Indian Lake community has shown remarkable resilience and support for those impacted by the storms. Individuals like Amanda Strayer, a special education teacher at Indian Lake High School, have come together to assist in providing essential items such as clothing, food, and blankets to those in need. The outpouring of help and solidarity demonstrates the strength and unity of the community in the face of adversity.
As recovery efforts continue, various organizations, including the United Way of Logan County, have set up funds to aid in tornado relief.
