MIAMI, FL – A Florida nurse is facing serious legal consequences after allegedly taking her mother off life support, leading to the elderly woman’s death at North Shore Medical Center. The nurse, 54-year-old Jawan Seth Green, has been charged with first-degree manslaughter and aggravated abuse of an elderly or disabled adult.
The events began on May 5, when Green’s mother was hospitalized with breathing issues. Her condition deteriorated rapidly, necessitating her transfer to the ICU and connection to a ventilator. On the day of the incident, Green reportedly told family members she intended to remove the life-sustaining equipment.
Hospital staff responded to the alarm triggered by the ventilator’s removal, attempting to revive the patient. However, Green allegedly insisted they halt their efforts, expressing a desire for her mother to pass peacefully. The patient died shortly thereafter.
After leaving the hospital before police arrived, Green was later arrested at her home. In her first court appearance on Monday, the judge found sufficient evidence for the charges, and she remains in custody without bail.
Health Care Systems of America, clarifying that Green was not employed by the facility, has pledged to cooperate fully with the investigation. The case has raised important discussions about the ethical dilemmas in end-of-life care and the legal ramifications of such decisions.
Green is slated to return to court as the proceedings continue. The case emphasizes the critical importance of following medical guidelines and the complexities involved in making life-and-death decisions.
