Doorbell Video Captures Terrifying Moments Before Deputies Were Shot

Two Harris County Precinct 4 deputies were wounded after responding to reports of gunfire at an apartment complex.

HUMBLE, Texas — A neighbor said doorbell video showed a gunman firing toward her front door before a late Friday shootout at a Humble-area apartment complex left two Harris County Precinct 4 deputies injured.

The shooting at Pavilion at the Groves on Woodland Hills Drive brought deputies, SWAT officers and a K-9 unit to the complex after reports that a man was firing a weapon. Authorities said one deputy was hospitalized, another was treated and released, and a 38-year-old suspect was taken into custody.

Investigators said deputies were sent to the complex around 10 p.m. Friday after callers reported an armed man discharging a weapon. A neighbor later said she checked a live camera feed as the danger moved close to her apartment. “I clicked the live feed and he’s shooting directly at my front door,” she said. Officials said deputies arrived and were met by gunfire. Several deputies returned fire before the suspect moved into an apartment, turning the call into a barricade scene.

The wounded deputy was identified as Deputy Dante Zepeda. Officials said he was shot in the hip and upper arm. Fellow deputies placed him in a patrol vehicle and took him to Houston Northeast Hospital before he was later transferred to a downtown trauma center. A second deputy was also struck but stayed at the scene until SWAT officers arrived, officials said. That deputy was treated and released. Authorities have not publicly released the second deputy’s name.

Harris County Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman said Zepeda’s surgery was successful and that his injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. Herman said Zepeda, who has worked in the Atascocita area since July 2025, faced a long recovery. “Please continue to keep Deputy Zepeda, his family, and our law enforcement family in your prayers as he continues to heal,” Herman said.

Authorities said SWAT officers surrounded the apartment after the suspect went inside. Officers later used CS gas, and the suspect came out of the unit. Officials said a police K-9 bit the suspect on the leg before he was taken into custody. The suspect was taken to a hospital for treatment and was expected to be booked into the Harris County Jail after his release.

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office accepted aggravated assault on a police officer charges, officials said. The suspect’s name had not been released as of Monday. Investigators also had not said what led to the first reports of gunfire at the complex or whether the suspect lived there. Deputies remained in the area after the arrest to process the scene.

By Monday, Zepeda had been released from the hospital and was recovering at home. The investigation remained active, with the suspect expected to face court proceedings after medical clearance.
