NPP Candidate Faces Violent Attack During Political Campaign Visit in Nkoranza South

Nkoranza South, Ghana – A routine political campaign visit by Harriet Kyeremanteng Oppong, the NPP Parliamentary Candidate for Nkoranza South, took a violent turn when her team encountered a tumultuous attack allegedly orchestrated by members of the opposing National Democratic Congress (NDC). This incident unfolded on March 29, 2024, during a community visit to Nsunensa, where Oppong and her team aimed to discuss the achievements of the NPP government and ongoing development projects, such as the rehabilitation of the Nsunensa Junction–Nsunensa–Meta Road.

As tensions escalated during the campaign event, Oppong’s team revealed alleged misinformation about the funding of the road project, implicating the incumbent MP and a contractor with political affiliations. The NPP communications team accused the MP of misleading the public by claiming personal funding for projects supported by the government. This revelation reportedly triggered a violent response from NDC members, who blocked the team’s exit using a tipper truck belonging to the road contractor and subjected them to verbal abuse and intimidation, particularly targeting Oppong.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as the NPP team faced aggression from NDC members, with the incumbent MP allegedly leading the attack. The NPP Communications Directorate swiftly issued a statement condemning the violence and stressing the importance of political accountability. The community of Nkoranza South now awaits further developments as authorities investigate the incident and stakeholders work towards resolving underlying tensions to ensure a peaceful electoral process.

During the campaign visit, Mrs. Oppong took the opportunity to highlight the achievements of the NPP government under the leadership of HE. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. Details about ongoing developmental projects in the constituency were shared, including the 12km Nsunensa Jn. – Nsunensa – Meta Road being rehabilitated by the Ministry of Roads and Highways through the Department of Feeder Roads under the Road Fund. The contractor involved, MESSRS FABDONKOR COMPANY LIMITED, is known to have connections with the incumbent MP for the area.

In response to the attack, the NPP team’s actions were considered an expose of the lies perpetuated by the MP, inciting the violent backlash from NDC members. This incident, along with past instances of aggression by the MP and his supporters, underscores the heightened political tensions in Nkoranza South. The NPP Communications Directorate emphasized the need for peace and civility in political discourse, urging community leaders to promote a safe environment for political engagement. As the investigation unfolds, stakeholders are working to address the issues that led to the violent outburst, aiming for a more peaceful electoral atmosphere in Nkoranza South.
