Nail Salon Engulfed After Electric Vehicle Crashes Through Storefront

The crash ignited a fire at an Alicia Parkway shopping center, but crews stopped the flames from spreading to adjoining businesses.

MISSION VIEJO, Calif. — A driver was taken to a hospital after an electric vehicle crashed into a Mission Viejo nail salon Wednesday and caught fire, setting off an emergency response that stopped the blaze from spreading through the surrounding shopping center.

The crash occurred shortly before noon Nov. 4 in the 24000 block of Alicia Parkway. The Orange County Fire Authority said the vehicle struck the nail salon and immediately caught fire. Firefighters were dispatched at about 11:42 a.m. Authorities have not publicly explained what caused the vehicle to crash into the business.

The driver’s condition had not been released as of Friday. No other injuries were reported in later local coverage of the incident. Early reports from fire officials said there were no immediate reports of injuries, while subsequent reporting said the driver had been transported to a hospital.

The fire created another concern for crews because the nail salon was part of a larger commercial building. Orange County Fire Authority personnel deployed several hose lines and knocked down the flames before they could spread to the rest of the structure, according to the agency. Video from the scene showed heavy flames and dark smoke around the crashed vehicle and storefront.

An unusual sequence of events put firefighters close to the emergency before the first regular response was fully assembled. Off-duty Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Chris Chang was nearby when the crash happened and entered the salon to check that people had evacuated. Two members of Engine 12 were also in the area on an unrelated assignment when they heard the dispatch and diverted to the fire.

Chang said bystanders had already begun responding before firefighters established their hose lines. Some used fire extinguishers against the initial flames and helped remove the driver from the vehicle. Chang then moved into the salon to check on the occupants even though, because he was off duty, he did not have the protective equipment normally carried by an on-duty firefighter.

Engine 12’s crew joined Chang, secured a water source and attacked the fire with multiple hose lines. The fire authority credited the response with keeping the flames from extending into the remainder of the building. Images after the fire showed significant damage around the vehicle and the portion of the storefront where the crash occurred.

Authorities have not released information explaining why the vehicle left its path and struck the salon, and no official finding about the cause of the subsequent fire has been announced. Officials also had not released further details about the hospitalized driver’s condition.

The investigation therefore remains focused on several unanswered questions, including what caused the crash and what happened immediately before the vehicle entered the business. The fire itself was contained without reported injuries to other people in the salon or neighboring businesses.
